What It Is

A 10ft half height cargo basket is an open-topped steel basket roughly 1.3 m tall, built on a 10ft footprint, with a solid plate floor, four forged pad eyes and a certified four-leg sling set.

It is not a container with the top cut off. It is a lifting appliance — designed, tested and certified as equipment for repeated crane lifting of heavy cargo, generally to DNV 2.7-1 / EN 12079-1 / ISO 10855.

Every basket ships with its own data plate, its own serial number, and a sling set certified separately from the basket itself.

Why Half Height

Full-height boxes are designed around volume. A great deal of offshore and industrial cargo is the opposite — heavy, dense, and useless to stack twelve pallets high.

Choose the basket if the cargo is dense and does not need weather protection. Choose the container if it does. Choose the skip if the job is waste.

The Engineering Most Buyers Never Ask About

Two things decide whether a cargo basket is still in service in year eight. Neither is visible in a photograph.

First, the sling angle.

When a loaded basket is lifted, the horizontal component of the four sling legs pulls inward on the top rail, while the vertical component carries the load. The shallower the sling angle, the worse the horizontal squeeze. A basket certified for a 60° sling angle and lifted with a short sling set at 30° can see the inward force roughly double — and the top rail buckles.

This is why a properly built basket is certified with a specified sling set length and sling angle range, and why the certificate states it. If a supplier sells you a basket without a matched sling set, you have a basket with no defined lifting condition.

Second, the floor.

Cargo that is dense enough to need a half-height basket is not evenly spread. It arrives on a forklift, or is tipped in from a grab. Point loads hit the floor plate, and the plate spans between the floor bearers beneath it.

Undersized floor bearers, or too much spacing, and the floor dishes — permanently. Once the floor deflects, water pools, cargo never sits flat again, and the unit is finished long before the frame is.

Ask for the floor plate thickness, the bearer spacing and the deflection limit. A supplier who can answer is building a lifting appliance. A supplier who cannot is bending plate into a box shape.

The tare figure on the plate is not cosmetic. If equipment is welded inside and the unit is never re-weighed, the marked payload is quietly wrong — and the certifying body's approval no longer describes the basket you are lifting.
