Every export order begins with a number no one likes to talk about: the cost of moving empty space.
A mini container exists to store things securely at a job site — tools, parts, equipment, consumables. It earns its keep on the ground, not on the road. Yet when it travels, it is charged like the volume it occupies, not like the contents it protects. A compact 6ft storage unit can cost nearly as much to freight as a full-size box, because shipping rates are written in cubic metres.
For a site-services contractor we supplied recently in Northern Europe — a market where trucking kilometres, port handling and labour hours are all expensive — that arithmetic was painful. The solution did not come from a larger budget. It came from a smaller footprint: six containers delivered as one.

The brief: a whole family of units

The customer ran equipment rental and on-site storage services for construction and infrastructure projects, moving their assets between sites across several countries. What they needed was a complete family of mini containers — 5ft, 6ft, 7ft, 8ft, 9ft and 10ft units — each rugged enough for outdoor site life, secure enough for valuable tools and materials, and available in sizes to fit everything from a single generator to a full maintenance workshop.
Simple on paper. Expensive in reality. Six separate units meant six separate slots in a terminal yard, six sets of lifting and lashing operations, six truck movements across borders — and one very large freight invoice arriving with the first one.

The answer: boxes that travel inside boxes

Instead of treating the order as six individual products, our design and production teams treated it as one logistics problem. What if the six units could collapse into a single footprint for the journey, then expand into six working containers at the destination?
That is exactly what we delivered.
Every unit in the family is engineered so that its outer profile nests neatly inside the next size up — the 5ft inside the 6ft, the 6ft inside the 7ft, and so on up to the 10ft outer shell. On the road, the entire order becomes one 10ft load. At the job site, each container is lifted out, set down, and put to work as an independent unit.
We borrowed the principle from a place nobody expects in industrial design — a set of nesting dolls — and applied marine-grade engineering discipline to make it work in the real world. Close-fit tolerances keep the nested units stable during transit; lifting points and fork pockets are positioned so each container can be pulled clear of the one around it without drama, even in a muddy yard with a rough-terrain forklift.
The effect on the logistics chain is immediate:

  • Fewer handling operations
  • Lower inland cost
  • Less damage risk
For a rental company whose margins live and die on mobilisation cost, the difference between shipping six units and shipping one footprint is the difference between a profitable project and a break-even one.

Nesting is a clever trick, but it earns nothing if the containers themselves cannot take the abuse of site life. Each unit in this family is built to the standards we apply to our full special-container range:

  • Twin access doors with anti-theft locking bars
  • Fork pockets and engineered lifting points
  • Weather-resistant marine coating
  • Interchangeable, repairable parts
The customer now treats the six units as one deployable system: nested for transit between sites, expanded into a storage cluster wherever work is happening, and packed down again in hours when the job moves on.

This project is not an isolated case.
